On 7th September, at the cassava industry development conference hold in Nanning Guangxi province, Yang Shaopin, the director general of farm and land reclamation bureau in National Agriculture Ministry said, “At present, the biological fuel alcohol is the biomass energy source that has the biggest production scale in the world. In our country average grain yield is not more than 400 KG per person, utilizing the barren hill, the wild slope and salt alkaloid area to plant cassava and then produce fuel alcohol, which is the best way for Chinese biology energy development.”

The expert introduced that highly concentrated planting area, advanced technology, high scientific research achievement level, formed certain processing ability is the actuality of Chinese cassava industry development.

At present, more than 90% output of cassava in our country is concentrated in Guangdong and Guangxi, the total output is more than 7,000,000 tons. It has formed the primary preponderant industrial layout; The cassava development in the key areas has initially realized the improved variety planting, the fertility growth standardization and the process specialization; The new variety of cassava developed by Chinese tropics agriculture academy of science and other units, can harvest fresh cassava average amount to 30-45 MT per hectare; There are more than 200 cassava starch and ethanol processing factories in China, and the starch yield reaches 500,000 tons, the cassava ethanol yield is 250,000 tons.

In the biological energy industry the recognizes view is: Cassava is versatile, has long industrial chain and high economic efficiency, and the cassava starch has strong protein adhesive power, low dextrinized temperature, good capability to become membranes, and strong permeability and so on fine physics and chemistry index, which has been widely used in papermaking, spinning, medicine, building and other industries.

Yang Shaopin told the reporters that, at present the cassava production of our country is still in initially phase, and the average fresh cassava yield is not more than 15 tons per hectare.

In 2005, China has become the biggest cassava products import country on the world, and the total import dry cassava chips reaches to 3,300,000 tons, the cassava starch 467,000 tons, but the cassava harvest area in our country is no more than 2% of the world.

Yang Shaopin said that, "Our country should take the cassava integrative production using level as the core to optimize the layout, enlarge the scale, enhance the yield per unit, and advance the deep processing and integrative using level.”
