Recently, the first pilot project—the cultivation of cassava in dene, which organized by experts from the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agriculture, was successful, and the yield achieved over 60 tons of cassava per hectare.

Last March in Ledong Li national Autonomous County Hainan Province, the expert of the Tropical Institute of Crop Germplasm Resources specializing cassava cultivation Huang Jie associated with the specialized planter Chen Sanlu, chose five different areas and seven pieces of dene in different environment to start the pilot project-plant cassava in dene. Measurement results show that after more than 10 months of growing, the yield of most areas is more than 40 tons of cassava, and the highest is up to 60 tons.

According to Huang Jie said, there are a lot of deserted denes in Hainan, because there is water shortage, drought and it is very difficult to plant grain crops. Chen Sanlu said that according to the current market, the lowest sale price of cassava is twice than the planting cost of it.
